Peter Kalerwa Salasia Mumias East MP has been formally charged with hate speech.

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Kalerwa Salasia was arraigned today at the Milimani Law Courts, facing charges of hate speech. He entered a plea of not guilty before Magistrate PK Mutai, who subsequently granted him bail set at Ksh 200,000 in cash or Ksh 500,000 in bond.

Represented by a legal team led by Ken Echesa, Salasia, charged under the National Cohesion and Integration Commission laws, also sought the reinstatement of his firearm following his arrest.

In his ruling, the magistrate ordered the investigating officer to appear in court on June 4 to clarify the status of the MP’s phone and whether the firearm is relevant to the ongoing investigation.

The charge sheet alleges that on May 10, 2025, Salasia published inflammatory remarks online, asserting that “Luos are the number one enemies of the Luhya people,” which is claimed to incite ethnic hatred between the Luhya and Luo communities.
