Sh 5.9 Million Rice and Sugar Fraud: The Businessman Samuel Karuga Wachiuri Behind the Scheme

A City businessman, Samuel Karuga Wachiuri, has been charged with fraudulently obtaining Sh 5,921,600 from Grace Njeri Irungu by falsely claiming he could supply 3000 bags of 50kgs of rice and 250 bags of 50kgs of sugar, a statement he knew to be untrue. Wachiuri, aged 37, is accused of committing this offense on various dates between May 6 and May 15, 2025, in Nairobi, with the intention to defraud.
He has denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Caroline Mugo. The prosecution has opposed his release on bail, arguing that Wachiuri poses a flight risk and may interfere with witnesses. An affidavit from Sergeant Patricia Mwendwa indicates that the police received information suggesting the suspect was attempting to flee the country. “Upon verification of this information, arrangements were made, and the suspect was apprehended by DCI officers at the Isebania border post while attempting to cross into Tanzania on May 22, 2025,” the investigator stated.
Sergeant Mwendwa further noted that the accused has been threatening the complainant, stating he would post compromising photos of her on social media to damage her family and public image if she does not withdraw the case. Through his attorney, Wachiuri contested the application and requested the court to grant him a lenient cash bail of Sh 50,000. Additionally, the court was informed that Wachiuri is married and that there is no evidence supporting the officer’s allegations. ENDS
