Officer James Mukhwana’s Detention: A Twist in the Albert Ojwang Murder Investigation

Albert Ojwang Murder Case: Police Officer James Mukhwana Detained Until June 20

Police Constable James Mukhwana, stationed at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, will remain in custody until June 20, when a court decision is anticipated regarding his potential release on bond.

This decision comes after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) filed a request for Mukhwana to be held for a minimum of 21 days, allowing time for a thorough investigation into the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died while in custody at the same police station. During the court proceedings, investigating officer Abdirahman Jibril expressed concerns that releasing Mukhwana at this juncture could compromise the investigation, suggesting he might interfere with witnesses.

In contrast, Mukhwana’s attorney, Danstan Omari, contested this claim, arguing that there are no substantial grounds for his continued detention. Omari highlighted that Mukhwana had willingly presented himself to the authorities when called upon, demonstrating his readiness to cooperate with the investigation.

Additionally, the IPOA is pursuing a court order to compel Safaricom to provide subscriber information, call logs, and location data for at least 17 mobile phone numbers believed to be associated with the case. Mukhwana was apprehended on Thursday in connection with the alleged torture and murder of Alfred Ojwang, who is thought to have suffered fatal injuries while in police custody.
