Court Takes Action: Man Charged in Sh 350M Land Fraud Scheme

A man has been charged with land fraud amounting to 350 million shillings. Sammy Louis Karanja appeared before Magistrate Ondieki at the Milimani Law Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The charges assert that Karanja conspired with unidentified accomplices to defraud Hasmita Patel, trading as Holloway Properties Limited, of a 1.591-hectare parcel of land located along Mombasa Road in Nairobi County, which is valued at 350 million shillings.

The fraudulent scheme involved the forgery of a land grant dated November 23, 2001, which Karanja allegedly presented as a legitimate document. Additionally, he faces a separate charge of forgery for allegedly falsifying the signature of a commissioner of lands, Jane Kanja, on the same grant, knowing that the document was not authentic.

Furthermore, Karanja is accused of obtaining 12 million shillings from Onda Concrete on November 10, 2023, by falsely claiming he could lease them a parcel of land, an assertion he knew to be untrue. Following the charges, he was granted bail, set at 50 million shillings or an alternative cash bail of 10 million shillings.
