President Ruto’s Tough Stance on Police Misconduct: Suspensions Loom

Will President Ruto's Pressure Lead to a Shake-Up in the Police Force?

Following the recent shooting of a business vendor in Nairobi’s central business district during a demonstration on Tuesday, pressure is intensifying on President Dr. William Ruto to suspend senior officials within the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In a comprehensive press release, Sebastian Onyango, chairperson of the Justice and Equality Council, a UK-based civil society organization, has called for the immediate suspension of these officials, citing constitutional violations.

The council specifically demands the suspension of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, his deputy Eliud Lagat, and National Intelligence Service Director Mohamed Amin, accusing them of failing to protect citizens during protests.

The demonstration, which was sparked by the brutal murder of Albert Ojwang’, a teacher and blogger who died in police custody, led to significant disruptions in business and transport in the area.

Several individuals, including the officer in charge of the station, Samson Talaam, and police constable James Mukhwana, have been arrested in connection with the incident. In response to public outcry, Eliud Lagat has stepped aside to allow for an independent investigation by the Independent Police Oversight Authority.
